Our pediatric dental team provides Oral Conscious (OCS) and Intravenous (IV) Sedation services for patients with complex pediatric dental needs.

CANDIDATES FOR Oral Conscious Sedation

  • Patients with mild to moderate behavior management concerns with multiple caries
  • Minimum age of 20 months
  • Minimum weight of 25 pounds and maximum weight of 100 pounds
  • Patients who have NOT been hospitalized for an asthmatic attack within the past year
  • Patients who have NOT had a seizure within the past 3 months
  • A medical consult from a primary physician is required for patients with any history of seizures, asthma, or heart conditions.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

During Intravenous (IV) Sedation, calming medicine is delivered through a needle inserted into a vein in your child’s arm or hand. It’s a safe way to relax your child during lengthy dental procedures.

Some parents worry about starting their child on an IV. Breathe easy — we assure you there’s no need to worry. Your child is in good hands with Dr. Barbara Yarn, our Board Certified Anesthesiologist. Dr. Yarn has years of experience working with young patients and IV drugs.

Dr. Yarn will give your child medicine according to his weight. She and the dental staff will then monitor your child’s heart, oxygen levels, and blood pressure during the procedure.

Once the procedure is over, your child should be ready to leave in about an hour. His vital signs will be stable, but he will feel drowsy and may need to be carried to your car. You or another adult will need to supervise him the rest of the day.

  • No history of uncontrolled seizures
  • No history of albuterol use within six months
  • No immunizations within 72 hours
